Chapter 9 - Arran

Arran pinched his hand hard under the table. When it hurt like hell, he finally let himself believe that it was real.

Jodie had agreed to go out on a date with him the previous day, but until this moment, he hadn’t let himself believe that it was going to happen.

Even when he had picked her up, he had thought she would change her mind. He had expected her to ask him to drive her back to her place, especially when their talk had turned to how much his clan… well, his ‘extended family’ influenced his decision. He had been afraid she would change her mind. He didn’t blame her. It had to sound strange to someone who didn’t know what dragon shifter clans were, and how they functioned.

A clan really was a dragon shifter’s extended family. A very nosy, interfering, extended family. Some clans, like Tristan’s, had councils that steered the clan and made every important decision that could potentially affect them.

Clans and living in groups had been important once upon a time when shifters had lived in the same society as humans, and there had been safety in numbers. Now, the shifters were essentially in hiding. Most clans had formed alternative societies that helped them function in the human world without being detected. Many of the old timers refused to see that the world had changed. Given their centuries-long life span, they sometimes couldn’t really fathom that the world of today was a different place.

While his clan of palladium dragons didn’t exercise as much control over its members, up until very recently, choosing a human mate was frowned upon, despite the fact that there simply weren’t too many female dragon shifters.

But the real reason he had held back was because he was afraid of the years he would surely have to spend without Jodie if he had chosen her as his mate. The difference in their life spans meant he would have to spend centuries without her. He could hardly tell her this without showing her his dragon form.

What held him back from showing her his form?

Like he had told her, she was already under so much stress. What good would it do to her knowing that the man she had finally agreed to give a second chance was a dragon shifter? Maybe he was even a little afraid of how she would react. What if she couldn’t get over him being a dragon shifter? What if she decided she didn’t want anything to do with him after all?

He would wait until their relationship was on a firmer footing to show her his true self.

“I love this place,” Jodie said, looking around the little shack.

Arran had discovered it quite by accident.

When his marital problems had started, he had found that long walks on the beach by himself cleared his head. On one such long walk, he had come across this little beach shack. It reminded him of the place he had taken Jodie on their first date in Hawaii.
